Seasons of Change

Seasons of Change

Autumn is definitely upon us and in this post I thought that I would share with you some of my favorite stories about seasonal change. Bear Has a Story to Tell by Philip C. Stead, follows the path of bear as he tries to tell a story to his friends who are much too busy preparing for winter to listen. A nice extension activity, especially for three to five-year old’s, is to act out the story with stuffed animals or stick puppets.

In the Small, Small Pond by Denise Fleming and Every Autumn Comes the Bear by Jim Arnosky are two of my favorites for very young children. The large images and minimal text make them perfect choices for new readers with limited attention spans. Both books feature changes to the natural world as autumn settles in.

Is this Panama? A Migration Story by Jan Thornhill is a non-fiction book that tells the story of Sammy, a young warbler and his first migration south to Panama. Along the way he meets other animals and learns of their winter plans. Appropriate for elementary students, the book also features a map of Sammy’s migration route and information about the migratory habits of other birds, insects and animals.

To finish up, here is a little song, sung to the tune of Five Little Ducks, about falling leaves:

Five Little Leaves

Five little leaves so bright and gay, (hold up 5 fingers)

We’re dancing on a tree one day. (wiggle fingers)

The wind came blowing through the town, (hold hands around mouth and blow)

And one little leaf came tumbling down. (roll hands downward)
